Been doing some reading and pestering knowledgable guys on this forum about upgrading my Prism Red Sea Skimmer. I thought i had the thing licked with its setting, but now it keeps on fluctuating, so much so that i end up with a container full of tank water that is only slightly murky.

I dont have room for a sump or refrigium (still dont understand what that is), so i need to find a good quality HOB Skimmer. Now although the Deltec mce 600 is quite expensive, i have always read that on pieces of kit such as this, you should not scrimp and scrape. So before i buy one, i just wanted to make sure i was not going in too heavy handed, especially as my tank is 130 litres and at present is FO with LR. In a few months time, i will start to think about corals, polyps etc etc, so the skimmer would be of major value then. Indeed if i go to a larger tank, this one will stand me in good stead.

My question is, although i have read up on the Deltec skimmer, is there another make out there that i should seriously consider? I have to admit to having been quite taken by the Deltec, so if its cosmeticly not as good as another make, i am really not interested. Its how the thing performs that presses my buttons, so to speak.

Well, my only concern is that the 600 might be physically too large for your tank Chris... They're not small ;). A 300 might be a better option. And unless you're planning on an acropora garden, the 300 should do you just fine. The only other option really for a tank that size (that's also worth it's weight in plastic ;)) would be the Tunze 9002, but this skimmer is internal and if you're concerned about aesthetics, it would not be the skimmmer for you. AquaC's are also good, but difficult to find in the UK without a money tree in your back yard...

:hyper: Quickly scrambles for info on an acropora garden's

So would I be right in thinking that if i got the 600 it would not "over skim" the tank, if there is such a thing?

The tank itself is dimensionally quite large, but i shall just double check the deltecs measurements and see how it would fit, if indeed it would..

Just done the dims of the tank and the Deltec, my god it is deep !!! 180 mm's, which means i cant get it around the back of the tank, without moving it. Shall hang slack for a while then and keep on tweaking the Red Sea Prism.

Thanks again Ski :) :good:

I had my deltec mce600 on a 125l tank for a year(its on a 180l now) and can only say its a fantastic bit of kit. As it will skim a much bigger tank its 'upgrade proof' that is if you go and get a 400l tank in the future(think mce600 rated for up to 700l) you won't find yourself needing to buy another skimmer. :good:
