Before I started using the Nutrafin DIY/COS system I used the airstone method, then I was advised to try one of the hardwood 'airstones'.
I gave it a try and the bubbles were much finer than the normal airstone.
In addition to this I used a home made CO2 bell sitting above the bubble stream to capture the CO2. I made it by cutting the bottom off a 2Ltr soft drinks bottle and attached a sucker to it using silicone and them stuck this on the side of the tank about 5 inches above the bubble stream, this kept the CO2 in contact with the water for much longer.
Note: with my homemade CO2 bell, I split some airline tubing length ways and used this to line the edge of the bell where I had cut the bottle ... just to ensure there were no sharp edges for the fish. It was a little tricky to get on, but worked (and looked) fine when held in place with a bit of silicone.
I still have this home made system on standby. I would use it again, but the Nutrafin bubble ladder is giving me some great results at the moment.
