My variatus just had her fry tonite, but I'm afraid they look deformed. I bought her a couple weeks ago, and I believe she was already pregnant. Another platy that I bought at the same time had fry that night, and they appear to be doing well. Only 4 of 7 have made it, but they all look relatively healthy. I was excited to see that the variatus was getting bigger and tonite she looked ready to pop so I separated her into her own little container. a coupe hours later i went to check on her and there were 7 fry in with her but they look deformed. they have bulges coming out of their stomachs that are reddish in color. I'll try to take a picture. can anyone tell me if this is a normal occurence? did i do anything wrong? what could be the problem?
thanks

they're all laying at the bottom, not really able to swim. what a bummer :(

From my experience of having guppy babies, they look normal. Within about an hour or so the bellies will go down and they'll look like little fish swimming around.
Hope that helps

mum needs to come out, and they look fine to me, they will lay on the bottom, maybe because in the wild there first instint is to hide in whatever is there. Give it a while and they will be looking for food.

thanks guys. a couple of them died. i took the mom out, she wasn't done yet when i took the pics. some of them look okay now...some are still lying on the bottom. I've never seen the fry freshly born, so I was a little concerned. Thanks for your help...I don't know what i'm gonna do with all these babies!! haha

How long have you had her? I've had fry get born and they don't look like that. If you just got her/somethings wrong with the tank then they probably got deformed from stress.

I have only had her for about 2 weeks now. she actually died today :( the fry are almost all fine though. a few died, but the rest look normal and are swimming around. their bellies went down and they look like the other 2 week old fry i have in the tank. (a separate tank of course)

if it was really deformed, you'd probably have to remove it. culling is hard but yet sometimes essential.
