Deformed Guppy

I was looking over my guppy fry and found a deformed one. They are pretty small still (about half an inch maybe) so I didn't notice until now. It seems that this guppy is missing part of its face because its mouth is always open! Its making an O. It seems to be eating all right so I think I won't cull it for now. I just won't use it for breeding purposes. I wonder what its gonna look like when it grows up!

I have a guppy tank, around 15 guppies, some pregnant, and a breeding net for the fry (approx 20 in there now) I have just been watching one of the guppies giving birth, and she gave birth to a couple of normal looking fry, then some slimy sack, then a deformed fry, it had a huge belly, and i was considering what to do, when it got gobbled up by another guppy..

I have a platy fry, 3 months old now, with a deformed spine. The little thing is sort of U-shaped, but as she is keeping up well at feeding times, not getting harrassed and none of my female platys are to breed (I remove anything that shows a gonopodium to another tank), I'm just planning to keep her as a pet.
If she does have difficulties with the others as she grows older I might just keep her in my hospital/office tank as a sort of honorary betta.

You will often have one or two deformed fry, the severity of the deformity will determine whether the fry will survive to adulthood or not, they would probably not survive in the wild but some will live happily in a tank; I'd let nature decide.

As you said though, it's best not to breed from them as the deformities will only get worse in their offspring.

Clairel - Don't worry about the 'huge belly' fry, he would not have lived long anyway.
