I’m pretty sure my next tank will be a 6’ x 2’ x 2’ tank, so now I’m looking at filtering options. So far I like the sound of the Eheim Thermo & Wet/Dry range mainly because of the integrated heating but these fall short in terms of capacity (600 litres but the tank will be 680 litres). The Eheim pro 3 & the Hagen FX5 have the capacity but no heating.

1. Could the capacity of the Thermo or wet/dry filters be improved?
2. Would the Eheim pro 3 or the Hagen FX5 with an external heater be better?
3. Are there other filters with integrated heating & a higher capacity?
4. Would a sump tank with an external heater be a better option?

Any advice would be gladly received

Well speaking from experience i have the FX5 on my 180 gallon and it works for me i really do recomend this canister it's silent powerfull good turn over rate.

The wet/dry is equally as good IMO not had any experience with it although i know people who use it and swear by it but i'm sure which ever you choose will be good for you and i garentee results from each model.

i've heard the wet/dry filter go wrong a lot! i was going to buy one but got the more reliable Eheim Pro II 2028

The eheim thermo models tend to use huge ammounts of power and really add onto your electricity bills, especially during the winter.

Personally id go with a couple of Eheim Classic 2217s, no thrills but fantastic flow rate and never loses power unless very undermaintained. I run all my larger tanks on these and wouldnt consider another canister filter.

Cheers all, :good: very helpful I was just having a little read up on your suggestions, CFC I noticed when looking I saw there is a classic 2260 have you ever given one of these a go? Being that they are the same technology do you reckon it would do the job as well as the 2217’s or would it be better to alternate two 2217’s for media changes & servicing? + What do you use to heat your tanks?

I heat the whole room rather than individual tanks, it works out cheaper than running around 3000w of heaters but before i had the fish room i used Visitherm heaters which are brilliant, very easy to set and keep perfect temperature.

I havent tried any of the larger classic models, im a great believer in splitting all the life support between two pieces of equipment so that if there is a failure somewhere the remaining equipmant can keep things stable until you are able to react but in theory the larger models should work just as well as the smaller ones.
