Hi,

I have just finished my fishless cycle, and having my temp cranked up to 30, my water evaporates really quickly. This is exaggerated as I have a large tank (860 litres).
During my fishless cycle I was replacing about 40 litres per week!

Anyway, I assume once my temperature is turned down I won't lose so much water, but that got me thinking, I know with Marine tanks you only replace the evaporated water, not the salt, but what about the Tropical tank?

So, if I lose 10 litres of water through evaporation and I want to top up my tank, should I add de-chlorinator or not?

Obviously I would add de-chlorinator when I am doing say a 10% water change.

my thoughts would be don't worry about it.

The de-chlor takes the chlorine out of the water when you first do a water change or top up. if it evaporates afterwards then it doesn't matter cos the chlorine's already taken out, just add the dechlor to the new water going in and you'll be fine. Also if you think if you add 40l of new water and say thats 5% chlorine (I have no idea how much is in tap water, just an example) then that's not gonna mean you've got 5% of your total tank water is chlorine, just 5% of the new water. So you don't need to have enough de-chlor in there to take out 5% of all the tank's water, just 5% of the 40l. Think that makes some sense?!

I've had tanks with high evaporation before and I've never worried about dechlor evaporating in it.

In Marine tanks you only top the water up cos salt does not evaporate, If you topped up with salt water mix you would increase the salt level every time, That is not good.

Fresh water dont have salt so not a problem, Just decorinate before adding or better leave to stand with a air stone in a bucket, This will get the clorine out in a few days and also allow the water to warm up to room temp ready, (If you have room of corse)

Chlorine will gas out in 24 hours with aeration, chloramine won't. Check with your local water department to see if you have chloramines before trying this.
