People always says that you cant overdose with dechlorinator, how true is this? I don't use drastic amounts but for example it says 1 drop per gallon, sometimes ill use 1 drop per half gallon if im only adding half a gallon for whatever reason...basically i always put a bit more rather than a bit less. does anyone know if this is likely to have any harmful side effects?

Put in the stated amount and it'll be fine.

I've been putting "a bit more" Sress-coat for the past 6 years with no problems.

Yeah - I do the same, if I'm only half-filling a bucket, I put the same amount of dechlorinator as for a full bucket (I always intend to only put half as much, but forget, because I'm stupid). As far as I know it's never caused me (or my fish!) any problems.

I always add too much dechlorinator. It says 1 capful per 8 litres, mine's 11 but I put 2 capfuls in. Didn't kill the fish. THe nitrite did

Dechlorinator doesn't kill fish. The problem is the additives, Stress Coat, Aquasafe etc all have aloe vera extract in them for fish scales (which is what they advertise as the "healing" part). Too much aloe vera can cause gill problems. Doubling the dose ocassionally won't do any harm, I do it myself. I wouldn't do it regularly, or massively overdosed though.

I always wonder if the dechlor stays in the water or somehow dissipates or otherwise goes away. I have a 3 gallon bucket but I don't have a 1/3 teaspoon so I usually end up putting in about a half teaspoon instead.

I just guess when I am adding dechlorinator I've also heard it's better to add a little more than to add too little and that you can never overdose with the stuff. I'm not sure on that. I would assume if your doubling the amount for a long period of time it might do some harm?

The dosage on the dechlorinator I use is 1 capful for 70 litres and the bucket I use is 10 litres so I just try to put in 1/7 in the cap. I can't be bothered sitting there and measuring the exact dosage for each of my tanks

lol i thought it was just me being a lazy *$%* when it came to measuring conditioner. I had a problem a couple of months back with my water getting a white bloom , after several unsuccessful attemts to clear it a member here told me to measure my conditioner and see what happens, mmmm yup clear water,he had the same problem for a while and like me was part of the "ach!! a little more wont hurt gang.

i use novaqua and amquel which state that you can add more than the recommended dosage without harm. i really like the fact that the bottles also state that they are harmless to humans, pets and aquatic life.
at work we use proquatics dechlorinator with the "slime coat protector" added.
sometimes i pump 5 or 6 squirts in the bag with no adverse effects. (i dont know why i put so much in, i think sometimes i forget whether i have already squirted it into the bag.)

the guy at my lfs told me that i could dump the whole bottle in if i wanted to, that it wouldnt effect the fish at all. I dont know how true, but i always throw a extra glug in for good measure

The conditioner I use says to add 2 drops per litre. Sometimes I stuff up and put in an extra drop or two, but I haven't had any probs with it yet.

the thing is, my bucket is 2.5 gallons and my dechlor dose is 1 drop per gallon and i obviosuly cant measure half a drop doesnt sound like it will matter though.
