Gahhhh please help!!....

I bought two new fish on saturday, A male swordtail and female. When I bought her she was already pregnant.

And she had the babies Sunday I think. I looked in the tank last night and she was dead floating near the filter? :(

I dont know whether its the stress of having the babies? Like travelling round in a bag while ur pregnant cant be good for her stress levels. And then maybe the male swordtail was harrasing her makng her stressed? But i didnt see him do that to much ??

Im pretty sad about it. I didnt have her long I know...But still.

About 3 of her babys have lived in my tank aswell. Normally they get eaten. I really hope they live. That way one can remind me of her. And how brave she was.

Any advice please let me know.

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Sadly it quite normal for the mother to die after births.

You really need to keep more females than males - twice as many females to males. If you keep one female to 1 male ratio the females get hassled too much by the males and this is very stressful for them leading to their immune system going down and then diseases set in.

Your female probably died from the stress of going into a new tank when about to give birth. if you did not introduce her the correct way into the new tank by floating the bag for 10 mins then gradually adding tank water the shock would have killed her.

If you want the babies to survive you will need a heavily planted tank so they have plenty of hiding places. good luck!

60 litre tank,

Ive got 10 fish now. 2 clown loaches. 3 lamp eyes. 3 Neon Tetras and one glow eye. And a male swordtail. And obviously their was the female.

I havent tested the water yet, i dont have an accurate testing kit atm, only one of them strip ones and i find it hard to understand. i need to save up and get a liquid test.
Thanks.

Yeah I thought that too, I think the next time i might get two or three female for him? Its good though i use to have a really harassing male, but he passed away and the new one ive got doesnt seem as bad which is a relief :)

Its sad how they die from the stress, Always makes me feel so bad. Yeah i did introduce her correctly, leaving the bag in the water floating for 10 mins. But i normally just put them after that?, i pour the fish into a net and get rid of the water in the bag cos you never know if the fish shops water has alot of chemicals or diseases??

Ahhhhhh im so glad to hear that!! I have a pretty load of plants, i keep seeing them hiding in their and then picking bits off the plants. do you think theirs a chance they'll live? I couldnt imagine any fish eating them, it would be horrible :(

Thanks xx
