My dad bought some neon tetra and some female mollies to go with the male he already had.
Within a day all the neon has started to die, within 2 days they were dead. They became lethargic and started swimming strangely before dying.
When the tetra were taken out of the tank most of them had no tails left and one had clearly been partially eaten cos he had no head. After the tetra died the original male molly and one of the new females died. Is it likely that the mollies ate part of the neon and contracted whatever killed them and also what could have killed the tetra so quickly? Water stats were ok and they showed no signs of finrot when bought.
Any ideas on what could have wiped out the neons so quickly and am i right about the mollies?
If anyone can give any info i'd be greatful. All the other fish have been fine since and even giving birth!! It's been over a week since it happened.

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Can you post water stats please. What test kit are you using?

How long did you climatise the new fish for.
What was the ph of the store to your tank.
Was the red stripe area bleached out.

It's a 60L tank, there were 3 mollies, 2 female one male, 3 balloon mollies, same, 5 neon tetra and an assassin snail.
It's the API master test kit. Can't remember the exact stats but nothing was out of the ordinary. pH was about 7.6 i think.
They were acclimitised for about 40 mins before being added to the tank, water from the tank was added to the bag etc etc.
Can't say i noticed the stripe being bleached out but they may have been a little pale.
Sorry i can't be more specific but this happened about a week ago now, just really curious to see if people think they were infected with something

it could of been a number of things.

Stress due to the journey, didn't cliamatise well. Which neons are known for.
Neon tetra desease.
Bacterial.
Signs of ntd are.

Bleached out red stripe area. Or milky subtance on red stripe area.
Blue area will be yellowish.
Black lining around the red tail area.
Lumps that go to a point.
Bent spine.
Fish will leave shoal and become restless.
Swimming in an odd manor.
Later stages dropsy and popeye,finrot.

Only one of them they had was the leaving the shoal/odd swimming.
It's the lack of tails that is puzzling when there was no sign of them being nipped by the mollies.
Is it likely whatever killed the tetra killed the 2 mollies when they did eat part of one of the dead ones?

All you can do now is keep a close eye on your other fish for ntd signs.

It's quite common to lose neons in a week. But not all of them.
