The title sums it up nicely...or not so nicely...
I bought 12 neon tetras last week...and I keep finding them (4 so far) in my filter.
One of which swam away for a little while, but passed away on the bottom of the tank later on the same day.
I don't know whether they just get sucked into the filter and squashed, whether they die first, and then get sucked in, or whether they swim in voluntarily and then get squashed. In my opinion, it would be very unlikely for a fish which was already dead (not to mention all 4 of them) to get sucked in, as it would have to be sucked in head (or tail) first. If it was already dead, it would most likely be stuck (sideways) against the filter, not inside it.
I did have one with pop-eye (some of you may have read that post), but as far as I'm aware, it had it when I bought it, and I found it dead the next day. I assume it was the only sick one, and the others were/are healthy. I've not noticed anything odd about the others since...other than the fact that they keep turning up dead in my filter.
I have a Rio125 (Juwel) with its own filter.
Assuming that they ARE alive when they enter the filter, does anyone have any ideas/suggestions how to avoid this? In a dream world I'd stick a piece of nylon stockings or something over the 'grill'...but how practical an idea is that, really?!
