Unfortunately belly, you are suffering,"new tank syndrome". The unfortunate consequence of this is dead fish. A newbies including myself have suffered with this, and our consequence is that we might as well throw our money at the lfs and say, here's my money. Pete had a story somewhere on this site on newbies and their first tank.
In a nutshell though, what you have done is to introduce too many fish in a brand new tank, with raw water. The pH shock, plus the stress to your fishes being transferred from an already mature water system to a new water system with perhaps high levels of all sorts of shemicals will have lowered the fishes immunity system and the pathogens within the water will have been able to attack your fishes. Did you notice what state your dead fishes were in? That would give some indication as to how/why they died. If they had ragged tails, that would be a great indicator for bacterial infection, such as fin rot or if their gills were very red then they may have picked up some form of parasite. If they had bloated bellys, it may have been an internal infection. All fishes come with their own bugs and they become resistant to them, but introducing them to a new set, suddenly, their system just cannot cope with it. Remember the smaller the creature the greater the illness is exaggerated. In small fish, a tiny ulcer we we may suffer from is sufficient to kill a fish. I hope this has helped you. I know its no consulation to your pocket, but I suggest that you read some books on the subject and take this as a hard lesson on what not to do in future. As I said earlier, you are not the first to do this, and I can guarantee you will not be the last. Take heart that you will manage your tank successfully. It will come, all of a sudden when you least expect it. So don't be discouraged.

The Dragons correct, now is the time for patience. It is hard to resist stocking a new tank. Try getting a live plant or two. that will give you a feeling of doing something with your tank, improve it's appearance, and help you down the patient trail. :)

belly read this article Cycling Safely. It'll help you on your way. If you have any questions AFTER reading it let us know. Rose

You know Rose, if you had a dollar for every time you put up your cycling safely link, you'd be rich   In fact if we all became fish consultants-WOW. Money would be rolling in. Our pearls of wisdom, especially to newbies are priceless, arn't they?
A chinese philsopher once said, when a master teaches his pupil all that he knows, then the pupil shall one day become the master. (deep meanings)

And, of course, Dragon is the Master Sturgeon Surgeon

True I would be rich....so pay up cheepskates. I'm poor here. I wanna meet the gang at the big get together. Oh well, I guess something has to be free. Rose

Thanks Ostrow, will I never live that title down? Sound class mind you, but it also sounds dead arrogant. I like to hide my light under a bushel. I can come out with a few pieces of useless gems now and then.  ;)

:p  :p MSS I had forgotten all about that till now. Rose
