Hi.

I;ve been keeping fish for about 3 months now and have had my first casualty. One of my plecos just dies. All water stats are OK, but here is the question.

He was alive but when I put my hand in to move one of my plants I noticed that he stopped moving. Is it possible I scared him to death?

Dylan

:huh:

What kind of plec was it? Some scare easier than others.

Wanna be careful going killing one of my favourite pleco's!
No joking mate, How big is the tank?- Golden nuggets (L-018) Are reasonably hardy
Had you noticed any signs before of him dying?

Forgot to add what were you doing with a golden nugget, Theese arn't begginer fish you know?
How big was the tank?
Also did you feed it muscles and cockles and cucumber/lettuce and other veggies?

Has your tank cycled and how big is it and what other fish? What readings have you got for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

Hi, im not a hundred present sure its a golden nugget. He does look like simon though. There are no signs of any illness in my tank, and all the fish seemed fine.

The tank is a 40 UK Gallon tank. I had 5 of these little fellas and am now down to 4.

As far a feeding goes, ive only had the fish since saterday, and was letting them mop up the algi in my tank and on my plants first. I'm going to drop some veggies in the tank within the next few days.

All my water readings are OK, but im going to do some more now anyway.

Cheers for your help.

Dylan

Hi.

The tank is a 40 UK Gallon Cycled Tank.

Reading are as follows

Ammonia = 0
Nitrites = 0
Nitrates = 10 (Is this a bit high?)
PH = 7.6

Regards

Dylan

Hmm maybe it was because you werent feeding them. Plecos do need more food than just the algae in the tank. Although fish can usually go days without food.

Maybe he was just a weakling lol. You know, the whole natural selection thing :dunno:

I don't think its this as he has only had the fish for a day. Was he active before he died? Did you see him cleaning up the tank at all? Was his color pale compared to the others?

Sometimes, fish do die for no obvious reason, or even just the stress of moving to a new tank.
