Hi,

I bought an Angel fish on Monday which died last night.

I have had my 40 gallon tank set up now for about 12 months. The water test kit i have is a liquid based kit (Tetra Test NH3/NH4) which has always read ok for water quality on the chart when the water has been tested, i also keep my tank at 26c and have a fluval filter.

I have in the tank 4 balloon mollies, 2 catfish, 3 gourami's, 2 guppies and 6 neons. On Monday i added an Angel fish which died last night. I am a little concerned as to what i have done wrong? .... the water is ok i am sure of that as all the other fish are ok, and i do infrequent water changes as i find this works best for me, possibly once a month.

This is my first attempt with an Angel fish, i am aware they like heavily planted tanks, and although mine isn't heavily planted it does have some plants in there (plastic ones), and there are plenty of hideaway places as the other fish use them quite happily.

Is there something i have done wrong?, i am thinking that it may just of been one of those things and the fish wasn't in perfect health when i bought it, it didn't appear to take in much food but it did eat and was swimming around and then going into a quite spot every now and then.

I am feeling quite guilty as i feel i have killed the poor thing and don't want to go out and buy more until i have had some advice.

Hope someone could throw some information or pointers at me.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Stu.

Right what was the ph of the store to your tank, also you said it wasn't in the best of health, could it maintain it's balance in the water, any fungus, tailrot or spots on the fish, was it pale or dark in colour, just anything to go on.

Hi Wilder.

My son bought it for me from the dreaded pets at home store so i didn't get to ask any ph questions. I have to be honest the fish appeared perfectly healthy in every way except it didn't appear to be interested in food although it did eat a small amount when fed. The fish was about an inch in length, yellow, black and white coloured, but definately didn't have any fungus on it, even when i took the fish out of the tank when dead the colouring was the same.

As i said i am baffled as to what i have done wrong.

Appreciate the help.

Sometimes it happens just stress from the move and new enviroment, or he could of already been ill at the store, sorry don't no really, just one of them things that happens, not eating can be a sign of stress with the move, sorry for your loss, R.I.P.

OK, thank-you for the info i feel a little better now. I will go to a local aquatic store near me and buy two together as they are a fantastic looking fish, and fingers crossed this time i will have more luck.

Thanks again.

I would do some water changes on the tank, with the fish dying, always best to quarantine new fish if you can, as you never no what they are introducing into the tank.
Ask the store if they have lost any fish, look at them for a while before you buy to see how they swim and if they are active not sluggish, check the body and gills, for anything that looks unusual, good look.
