hi i have a 350 litre juwel tank that has been running for about 2 months, i have a clownfish, tang, seahorse, and some starfish which are all fine. the water tests are good. i bought a fire goby yesterday day from my lfs and put it in my tank, but last night it was dead would there be any reason for this or is it just bad luck? thanks

There are many reasons this could have happened. Did you acclimate it? It could have gone into shock and died from changing environments too rapidly. It could have already had a disease that you couldn't see, or could have already been stressed and you didn't know about it. {I like to ask when the fish got in to the store to know if it has been under transportation stress lately.] Did you put it into the main tank or a quarantine? Because if the fish was ill, it may have brought some of the illness to your main tank. If you don't have a QT, use Paraguard for a few days when adding new fish to avoid the spreading of disease that may come from the LFS.

hi yes i put it in the tank for 20 min still in the bag with the bag open, and added a bit of my water each time. i did this with the other fish and they are fine. the goby was fine all day but as soon as the lights went out i noticed it was dead.

Odd, thats not terribly normal with firefish gobies, they're pretty hardy. Regardless of why it happened it happened. Did you ask to see the fish fed at the LFS? Here's the method I use for purchasing a fish locally...

First, I check to see when the fish came in. If its spent two weeks or more I skip to the next step. If less than 2 weeks, I ask them to put it on hold for me for at least a week, up to two if they'll let me.

Then I ask them to feed the fish so I can see it eat. If it eats something exotic, I purchase what it eats and the fish. If I can, I'll tell the LFS that I'll come back for the fish a day or two later as shipping with a full stomach is not a good idea :).
