Well thought it would be a good time to start my journal so here goes…

Firstly I’d like to say that this scape, in whatever form it takes, is dedicated to my dad who despite not always understanding or being enthusiastic about my hobbies has paid for most of the purchases that have made the planted tank possible. He cringes whenever I suggest wiring up my own lighting, or fitting a high pressured CO2 cylinder in the living room but he still allows me to go ahead and helps wherever possible.

Just a quick note on the name, I named the scape because it seemed only right, at least to me.
The name was chosen for a lot of reasons; one being the decor was collected locally. I’m also proud of my heritage, and will take inspiration from the land around me. And what a landscape, the rolling green hills and lush valleys. But the name also includes the people, borderers tend to lead a slightly slower pace of life than the rest of the country does, they take changes in their stride and adapt to them and this is the attitude I’m taking with the tank. Going slowly and seeing what happens.

I decided to keep a journal as I enjoy reading everyone else’s and have learned so much from them. I’m sure mine won’t be nearly as useful as some, but even if people learn what not to do at least it was worth it. But also I hope I be given plenty of guidance as I go along there’s a lot of very smart helpful people on here and if they are prepared to give me advice as I go along then I’d be daft not to take it. As you can see this post is probably be very long, so I don’t imagine anyone will read it all and you have no idea how grateful and respectful I am of anyone who does.

Initially my planting won't be anything exciting more convincing my self that my plants won't just die any more, if that is indeed the case. So don't expect epic landscape displayed as a planted tank just yet.

OK some information on the tank and set-up

Tank:

240l/ 52 gallons
48”X18”x18”
It’s old and scratched to pieces, but it will make a good display none the less

Lighting:
2 x 54W T5s with reflectors
+ Possible 1 x 30W T8 without reflector
All Sylvania 865 daylight tubes

Still undecided on what I’m actually doing totally here and may need some help once all my kit arrives

Filtration:

External Fluval 304 ( my most hated possession)
Internal Fluval 4+

Hopefully this will be enough turn over as the tank is fully enough already without adding a powerhead

Heating:

Presently an internal 300w heater
I may swap over my hydor 300W external from my other tank but my hatred of working with the external filter is stopping me right now.
Keeping it at about 25C

CO2:

Pressurised 5Kg Fire Extinguisher
Azoo regulator and solenoid
Glass diffuser

Substrate:

B&Q topsoil + JBL substrate nutrient concentrate
Topped with fine Gravel.

Décor:

Local Rock
More info further down.

Fertiliser:
All in one mix dosed daily

Right now I’m pretty much at a standstill until all the equipment arrives, it is all ordered. Total cost of £250 right now and I started with a £100 budget.

But I thought I should start right at the beginning so I’ve copied and pasted the next bit from a previous thread, hope nobody minds too much but it contains all the needed information.

The tank went from this

BILD0361.jpg

To this

BILD0373.jpg

I was up most of the night doing it, and as you can see, I've made a tank that look perfectly all right into a tank which is a bit if a mess. My Ballast for my lighting still hasn't arrived, so the new lighting isn't fitted yet.

Things I've learnt so far

1) No matter how old you are you can still get shouted at for spilling water all over your parents carpet.
2) I truly hate the fluval 304, its the worst filter in the world and was nearly binned at 2am, it is now doing what its supposed to
3) The VAX is a truly amazing invention, even if its 12 years old and been unused for most of those years. Nothing else has the ability to remove all the water and left over coral sand from a tank quite the way a VAX can.
4) The VAX is also very good for removing water that the 304 spills all over the carpet
5)Never trust the calculator on the internet that tells you that 10KG of gravel will give you a 1cm of depth
6) No matter how angry your parents are they are still prepared to get the colander from the kitchen at 1 am to remove the finer gravel from bags of larger stuff.

Next steps

I need to fit the lighting, get another 20kgs of fine gravel and order plants. I also want to add a couple of fish from my other tank to give the filter bacteria something to do. The tank will eventually be properly stocked but for just now there are a few fish without shoals in my other tank so they are going to be moved, probably sometime tonight.

edit - Oh yeah I also meant to add a handful of peat to the top soil along with the jbl substrate concentrate, it was to give the plants a few extra minerals and also counteract the higher pH in the water. But I forgot so nevermind.

Continued..

Tank now has extra gravel and has cleared, stocking right now are 1 black widow tetra, 1 white cloud mountain minnow and i harlequin rasbora. All settled in fine, really only added to keep filter going, they've been loners for some time now in another tank and shoal together :good:.

Now Today 12/08/09

Today started with a parcel arriving in the mail, it was realy unexpected as I only ordered from Aqua Essentials at 3pm yesterday, talk about service. If I had the money everything would of been purchased from here.

BILD0392.jpg

And my mum went on a trip to Asda for deionised water

BILD0394.jpg

The rest of the day was spent looking for rock for my aquarium. I chose local rock for many reasons, I truly love the wood displays but am already way over budget and its really expensive. It also means that I have no worries about throwing out stones I don't like and finding new ones. And why not its free and hopefully will look OK. I may regret skimping on decor here, but if I do it can be replaced.

Anyway after spending a day with a sledge hammer and pressure washer ( great fun) I ended up with this.

BILD0379.jpg

No idea how I'm going to lay it out or what pieces I'll use but will experiment tomorrow. I think it looks a lot better underwater they look a bit naff dry.

I think that's all for just now

13/08/09 -

Few small updates, firstly my fire extinguisher arrived :good: . Its massive, dad's gonna kill me when he sees what sitting in his living room.

BILD0395-1.jpg

Some bad news to, got a phone call from the home brew company, my order has been delayed until they get more ascorbic acid in. My mum had been around a couple of chemists asking for it previous to ordering and got looked at like she was stupid. She actually had to explain to them it was vitamin C, and these are the people we have to trust to give us medication. You can get it at Holland and Barrates but its £5.99 and you have to buy a massive tub and since I need the potassium sorbate I'll just wait. If I want to get started before they arrive I can dose the ferts dry.

Finally the rocks are in. And I'd love some advice from the more experienced people on here. This is something that is new to me and I have little idea what I'm trying to achieve. Pictures below are what I think I'm going for but any advice, be it small changes or telling me I'm going about it completely the wrong way are appreciated. I'm kind of worried that there is not enough height, but don't really want to use rocks any larger, as they are heavy and I'm terrified they end up getting knocked through the tank or something.

Well some more bad news and some more good news.

My Fluval 304 finally broke on me, and although this was initially a real pain, and I didn't really have the money to replace it I''m very excited about having a eheim 2217 on the way to replace it. A Fluval external shall never be used on any of my tanks again :good:

And also my regulator arrived this morning, all the way from taiwan. And it definitly looks the part all shiny with lots of knobs I don't understand ;) The bad news in this case is the American plug. My limited electrical knowledge suggests that it will be safe to use with a regular adapter or even replacing the plug for a UK one, but going over to the DIY section to confirm.

Hi Shrimply,

The tank looks like a good start. You've got all the equipment and you are putting thought into it which is very good.

It is a beautiful tank and stand.

What are your eventual scaping plans?

llj

Hi, thanks. I'm still concerned that the rocks don't give enough height but I like how they look right now.

As to scaping, species wise I'm not sure at all, initially I intend to order a large collection, convince my self that plants will actually grow and give me a chance to learn to work with aquatic plants, which is something i haven't really done before. Then look more specifically at species which suit my needs and order from a more specialised supplier.

I would love carpet in ther but am not convinced that there will be enough lighting to achieve it.

5 minutes in paint achieved this which i think is the general shape that I'm going for

Capturekjlk.jpg

Fish stocking I'm thinking
6 congo tetra's
6 cardinal tetra's
20 cherry shrimp
and 2 bristlenose plecs - probably not the best choice but I'm hoping they won't do too much damage

Also quite fancied 3 Celebes Rainbows but have been doing some research and it appears they are more brackish fish, so they may not be suitable.

Still thinking everything over though, while I wait for everything arriving.

But I welcome all advice and if I'm doing anything wrong then I'm perfectly prepared to take criticism on board.

Vallis will work well for the tall plants on the sides and some java ferns and amazon swords could bulk up the areas where the vallis are. As for the small plants on middle right some crypts could do well and some java moss would look great on some areas of the rock.
A java moss carpet is easily do-able.

These are only plants I've tried and so there will be others perhaps more suited, but those are my ideas anyway. Looks great so far, love the rocks.

Are you not supposed to have some types of wood with certain species of Pleco?

I'm in a similar position with the plants... Don't really know what I'm doing but decided to pick some plants I like and see how I fair with them... I've picked out some fore - mid ground plant now need to think about the background now...

I'm really liking the hardscaping, but might be worth baring in mind the height of your plants. U dont want to loose the rock structure in sea of green leaves!

19/08/09 -

Not much to update, I'm a little bit upset that some of the things I was expecting haven't turned up yet, not stuff from abroad but I among other things I have light reflectors that were ordered over a week ago from a UK company and they don't seem to of been dispatched yet.

Bad news/ Good news for today is that my bubble counter and check valve arrived from aquatic magic, but the check valve is broken. Going to email them and see if they'll send out a replacement. Don't know how much luck I'll have though as they cost me 99p with free postage, but here's hoping. I do have plastic check valves I can make do with but they hardly look the part and I've heard they aren't as reliable.

Capturegfsdgg.jpg

Hopefully with the set-up I've got I won't be too limited, not really interested in using java moss to make a carpet, although it should factor in somewhere,. I sure I'll seek advice later as to what would look best and fair best in my set-up.

I am worried about the height of the rocks versus taller plants but I think I'll plant it with the rocks they way they are and see how it looks, if it isn't right I'll change some things about, hopefully that's the best way of doing it.

If I get bristlenoses then I'll conceal small pieces of bogwood in amongst the plants for them. As I said though I am open to suggestions, its just I've always had a soft spot for plecos and never had the chance to have any.

20/08/09 -

No Bad news for once, I think. Unless you count the broken laptop that needs replaces, jeez to think I was annoyed about buying a new filter. But that isn't strictly tank related.

Anyway, some updates

Aquatic magic are sending a replacement check valve at no extra charge. I have also found a supply of CO2 through a friend of my dads. And having finally chased up my filter I've been promised delivery on Monday.

Over the last two days my CO2 tubing and drop checker have arrived.

BILD0039-1.jpg

And so did my scales, which I love, they are so cool and for £4.50 I was well happy with them, even though they have lots of measurements I don't understand  .

BILD0037.jpg

But the main thing that arrived today was my light reflectors. Another company I had to chase up, you have to wonder what's going on when your receiving stuff from Hong Kong quicker than the UK. Anyway it meant that all my lighting gear was finally here for I got to do something practical.

BILD0035.jpg

My ballast wired up and ready to go.

BILD0043.jpg

And after a lot of measuring, screwing and cursing I ended up with this.

Fittings

BILD0061.jpg

With Tubes

2.jpg

Reflectors Fitted

BILD0063.jpg

And when I plugged it in, it blinded me, which means it works :good:

I also ordered some digital timers yesterday, not essential as I do have analogue ones but these ones are more compact, easier to set and best of all for lazy me have a back up battery, so you can unplug them or go through a power cut and not have to reset them. :shifty:

Since all I'm waiting for now is my diffuser the journal might start to get more interesting. One item and I can get going :hyper:

is that ballast waterproof?

No neither are the fittings, but there are cover glasses fitted and never any moisture in the hood or back compartment so I'm not worried. Not that a small amount of moisture would do any harm either, but if I ever flood the hood I'll be in trouble.

And since the entire lighting set-up including tubes cost £70, its a big saving and one I feel safe making.

21/08/09 -

Guess what

Capture2342342.jpg

One diffuser, not as big as I thought it was going to be due to reading the description wrong, its 40mm in diameter, not the ceramic disk that's 40mm. But hopefully it will be big enough. If not then I'll have to look into a more expensive one. It does look cool though, which is the main thing ;)

Also got a shaving adapter to plug the solenoid in.

Capture34453454345.jpg

Which means I'm ready to go. The plan is to test all the CO2 equimpent today, and order some plants from plantsalive.co.uk . I intend to buy the 48" collection, plus 50 surplus plants and some java moss. And see what happens from there.

23/08/09-

Co2 kit now setup. The only issue is an erratic bubble counter but I'm blaming this on the plastic check valve requiring too much pressure for the Co2 to pass through it. It shouldn't make too much difference in the long run. Can't say much more as the system is now off so as not to kill the fish but I get tiny bubble through the diffuser so it seems to work.

Just about to order my plants.

Been thinking a bit about timings and dosing so if anyone would like to comment please do.

Timing wise I was thinking this, it seems to fit with what I've read but not sure if the photoperiod will be too long initially.

Capture31232123.jpg

And since I won't be able to make my all-in-one solution immediately I calculated ( roughly) how much would be getting added if I added 1ml/20l and looking at the estimative index thread came up with this. The only thing is that these figures are no where near as high as the amounts suggested in the EI thread so any advice is welcome.
