ive recently lost 2 barbs to infections brought on by possible nitrite problems. my tank should be fine now as i did a water change and will test it asap.

right now i have a 13 gal tank with
1 green barb
2 tiger barbs
2 albino tigers
4 peppered cory cats

since my lfs has a 30 day guarantee on fish, and will take back my 2 poor dead guys, i was wondering if maybe itd be alright to add 2 danios to my tank? i know theyre fast enough to allude the barbs, and are hardy little fish.

should i just leave my tank as is? as to not raise nitrites? or am i safe to add 2 more fish, be they more barbs (if available), or a couple danios.

id like to get exchanges for my deceased guys because theres no credit, just exchange. and itd be nice to be reimbursed.

what do you guys think, oh wise forum fishaholics? :D

*oh and if anyone else has had nitrite problems, or well.. seemingly random barb deaths, any advice? it really sucks and i hope these two were the last.*

Check the water perameters. You should be able to fit one-two more fish in, but I wouldn't suggest danios. These fish need to be kept in large groups and wouldn't emjoy being in that tank.

I would sugest keeping the tank as is, but if you really want fish, I wuld suggest tiger barbs so any aggression is further dissipated.

In full aggreement

Danios need to be in at least a group of 5.

Before adding any fish, you have to take care of these "nitrite problems." You should wait for your tank to fully cycle until you add any more fish.

How long has the tank been set up? Do you have test results for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate? Nitrite consuming bacteria will eventually grow to a sufficeint population to eat all the nitrite the ammonia consuming bacteria have been excreting -- it just takes time.

An established tank that is fully cycled should not have nitrite problems ever. Please read the info on cycling here.
