I was all excited to turn my 20 gallon into a betta tank, and long story short, that tank has turned into a home for a very ornery female convict cichlid.

Part of me wants to take her back to the store and say "YOU GUYS DEAL WITH HER. SHE LIKES TO BITE THE EYES OF OTHER FISH, AND WON'T EVEN TOLERATE PLECOS. JUST A HEADS UP. ENJOY YOURSELF." but I love her too much. So she gets that tank for now.

Anyways, now every time I go to the LFS, I look at all the pretty (and very sad) betta fish, and I'm just dying to take one home and give it a good life.

Ultimately, my question is, what would you guys say is the minimum tank size for 1 male betta, perhaps a school of small rasboras, and some ghost shrimp or small cory catfish?

thanks much.

I'm not planning on keeping a betta in anything less than 5 gallons

But I'm trying to aim for bare minimum because I'm gonna have to put the tank on my dresser if I do get it, I don't have enough room for another tank stand :look:

Ha i no that feeling lol my dad hasnt realised that ive got 2 bettas in betta boxes while i condition them if he did id be homeless lol

Yeah, I'd say 10 gal. I have my betta in a 50L (about 11 gal?) with microrasboras, endlers, shrimps and snails and there's plenty of room.

I'm not entirely sure that a 10gal would happily have a betta AND a shoal of cories. Plenty of room for a betta and some microrasboras or endlers though. Or a 5gal for a solitary betta.

I would only think it was suitable for pygmy cories, not 'normal' size species. But I haven't tried them personally so I wouldn't take my opinions as gospel :)

I've been dying to get some cory cats. But they're not compatible with tiger barbs and nothing is compatible with my convict. I guess I'll give it a wait, though. I'll go for some shrimp instead. Another thing I've been dying to get but can't do to my awesome choices in fish

You could try Corydoras Hastatus.

I have got a shoal of these in with my Betta and they are a very interesting species of fish. Unlike most other Corydoras, they can often be seen swimming around the middle portion of the tank as well as across the substrate. They seem very friendly as well and will not grow much more then 3cm.
