Hello all,

I have just set up a new aquarium and after 5 days of running the aquarium without fish i was advised of some good hardy fish to start off the cycle, what i got was 2 swordtails, 2 dalmation mollies and 2 platy.

The mollies and swordtails are having a whale of a time and seem to be very happy in there new home, unfortunately the mollies dont seem to be, they just sit around and the bottom of the tank and venture out occasionaly, they also dont seem to get much food because the other fish much it up before they get the chance . One of the mollies is more active than the other one, just wondering if this is normal?

Thanks for your help in advance

Dan

I don't have mollies, but from some of the posts I've read, mollies do best in a brackish tank (aquarium salt in the water). Maybe that has something to do with it. :/

Well,

My Mollies sulk aswell. If I so much as move one plant they go on strike. If I move the bogwood they sulk. If I so much as sniff at the co2 reactor they go silly and hide for days, which isn't really that hard in my tank. Mommy has just dropped another 30 or so babies today. My tank is not brackish, and has a pH of around 6, so they don't seem too concerned about tank stats. Give them a couple of weeks to settle. They wil be fine, and they will always be the first to the top for feeding time!

sub.

Cool thankyou, will keep an eye on them, i think the more active one may be pregenant as its belly is considerably bigger than the other one, is there are normal difference in size between male and female, and how do you tell the difference between sexes?

mollies need a little salt in the water. Dalmation mollies are expensive compared to other common livebearers so I wouildn't use them to cycle my tank if I were you.
