just got back and found the dad dead, no sign of illness and all the other fish, the mother and the babies are all ok???? could it just be stress of keep guarding the kids??? the mom seems to be coping alright for now with the babies but should i think about getting them out??? please, any help or suggestions would help a lot cheers, sean

I wouldn't think stress would have anything to do with it. Just a few questions to try to id what happened.

1. What size tank do you have them in (dimensions & gallons/liters)?

2. Were there any signs of illness or damage from aggression on the dead fish?

3. Had he exibited any new/strange behavior in the last few days?

4. What are your water stats, PH, Ammonia, NitrIte, NitrAte (actual levels if possible)?

5. Have you added anything new to the tank?

6. Have you used any new cleaners around/near the tank?

7. How often and when did you do your last water change?

Sorry for all the questions, but if you can do your best to answer them, maybe we can figure out what happened.

same thing happened to me when i had kribs- dad died not long after the fry where born

What other fish are in the tank if any?
The female can rear them herself if she has nothing much to defend them against, but i wouldnt get another male until youve got rid of the young. Do you have somewhere for them to go as kribs are really hard to sell on?

thanks for your replies
1# last water change was 25% last sunday (on a juwel lido 120l), was planning another today ( i use RO water from local fs) no other fish have been added, the father had no signs of illness or damage but i did notice in the days leading to his death that he would leave the mother and fry for extended periods and go and hide behind the plants in the back of the tank. no meds or treatments have been used. in the tank i have platys, corys, tetras, danios, and two angels, just a basic community. i have been spending this week setting up a cichlid tank for my kribs so i do have a place for them do you think i should move the mother and the fry now??? on last count i think ive lost about five since the father died so it seems the mother is struggling?? suggestions please?? thanks, sean

They will be fine, and the reason that they have so many babies is becasue they know that not all will make it. Second, i wouldnt suggest kribs and angels. It can be a bad idea. Third, the danio's may be harrassing the kribs with there fast and akward swimming behaviours, and fourth, i am thinking that the mom may have had a part in his death becasue females can become ovr protective and want to take care of their babies themselves.

danios are great dither fish to encourage kribs to spawn,
but they should be removed after the fry are born or they will eat them all.

I agree with black angel
don't get another male until the fry have gone, or he will eat them all as they are not his
