Can I do a fishless Cycle with plants in my aquarium or do i have to wait? Also I have pretty big corral looking gravel in my aquarium is that ok for plants? what about changing to sand is there anything i need to know about that?

Yea you can do a fish less cycle with plants, isnt going to hinder or hurt anything, the plants are going to absorb some of the waste your going to produce, but in the big picture wont matter all that much.

If your serious about having a planted tank i would invest in some proper substrate such as Red sea florabase, Flourite, or many people use Eco-Complete, there is also AdA substrate out there. It all really depends what your taste is, they all have different looks and different uses.

The benefit of that stuff over sand or gravel is that gravel and sand have no benefical nutrients for plants. So if you have a heavily planted tank, most plants get all there nutrients from there roots, and the good expensive substrate you bought does just that job. Sure you gotta other stuff too but you got a huge head start over someone who is just using gravel or sand which has no nutrients at all. If you choose to go with gravel root tabs are usually a good thing, you place them under the plants and they provide nutrients that way.

Myself i love the look of my red sea florabase and it works amazingly, would never go back to gravel.

Tried sand in the past looks nice.. but a ***** to clean the tank... and can get very mucky.

Do you have to keep adding the substrate to your tank so there is always nutrients there? And what is all this talk about layering substrates?

You don't really need to feed the substrate as the fish waste will accumulate and do that.

I personally do add "root tabs" to the base of my larger rooting plants every 6 months just to keep things topped up with the correct nutrients.

Layering substrates is just that.

Some people add laterite or some other plant substrate like Tropica Plant substrate. Then you add a layer of sand of gravel on top of the soil. Mainly for aesthetic but some species of fish prefer different substrates.

My new plated tank has a laterite substrate but its getting covered with sand as I don't like the dark red colour of the substrate.

Edit cos MS word auto corrected to fluorite and not laterite.

How much would it cost for me to replace my gravel to sand and and a layer of substrate and buy plants? Also how much should i plan fore a new aquarium light? I have a 30Gal tank. Where not talking about anything to fancy here.
