Do I need to check everything with a fancy test kit or is it enough to check just ammonia? Basic 10 gallon tank with two guppies currently in its second week with ammonia at .25 - .5 They currently seem stressed - swimming fast, darting about, spending a lot of time at top of the tank. Any thoughts? People on this site are so helpful. Thanks.
If you have ammonia showing large water change for fish in cycle. Same for nitrite. Make sure you add declorinator. While you are cycling ammonia and nitrite are the main things you need to worry about. Nitrate wont come into play into later. And unless something crazy happens PH isn't a big concern and is usually more trouble to change than it is worth. Read up on fish in cycling here:
