Cycling question

Hello everyone
I currently have a 10 gallon tank with 3 danios and am working on upgrading to a 40 gallon tank. While testing the water and letting the 40 gallon tank cycle, would putting the sponge from the 10 gallon filter help with that? Or should I not put it in there and just let it cycle without it?

Put *part* of the sponge, not all of it, into the new filter, to aid the cycle (assuming the 10G is cycled)
