I started my fishless cycle on 8/11 on my 55 gallon. I accidentaly added too much ammonia to 8ppm so did some water changes to get it to 4ppm. The ammonia hasn't gone down much. It is down to about 1ppm now,PH is 7.6,Nitrite is off the chart,I have some nitrates. I had also used media from another tank and Tetra Cycle. So now that the Nitrite is so high I am assuming I need to do a water change.

You used tetra cycle and probably screwed up your fishless cycle, in which you only add ammonia. I would dump all the water and then dose ammonia up to 4ppm and carry on from there.

You need to leave the cycle alone mate is doing its job. Nitrite will take as a rule twice as long as ammonia to process. Cut back adding ammonia 2ppm daily untill nirites catch up.

I thought it was a good thing to have nitrites and nitrates...
