Hello, Im new to to forums but not new to tropical fish. Im starting up a new fw 29g tank and have added 3 guppies and 1 goldfish.. My question is, I have an extra 30g filter laying around that I used on my old tank. Should I use both of the filters to bring more oxygen to the tank and maybe spread some bacteria from my old filter? Ive also been keeping the tank at 89 degrees to ensure more bacteria growth..any sugestions welcome, im hoping this isnt a dumb idea.

I don't see why you can't use two filters. It's actually a good idea, I'm using two in my 29 gallon tank. If nothing else, keeping two filters running will give you an extra fliter for another quick set up tank should you ever need it. It will indeed increase oxygen levels in the water. If the filter has been dry for some time, I wouldn't count on it having extra bacteria in it anymore though.

More oxygen and high heat will aid the cycle, as will seeding the tank with mature media. I used some potted live plants I picked up at Petco. Plants were bought from a tank with fish in it. My 29 gallon tank cycle is still in the middle of nitrite peaking ATM. Don't put the heat too much above the mid eighties though as the bacteria will not stand temps in the nineties.

One other note, my water measures out with a PH of 8 and it is very hard. I suspect yours is similar. My Nitirte peak is lasting longer than I expected.
