hi, thanks for the reply miss wiggle, the only thing that worries me is that the tap water we are putting in is very high in nitrate, now the test kit im useing is interpet easy test. how ive tested the nitrate, is a glass off water left for twenty four hours then test the water. now my test kit is showing nearly 100mg/lt so i wouldnt know if the nitrate is 20mg/lt is over the 100mg/lt as the test kit only goes up to 100mg/lt. what we also done last week was a 25% water change one day to try to bring the nitrate down which that didnt work then two days later we done a 50% water change for nitrate but still didnt do anything, is their any other nitrate test kits which tests for higher results than 100mg/lt. sorry for being a pain but you must know what us newbies are like lol many thanks.just to answer a question above that wasn't answered, mg/l and ppm are exactly the same so no need to worry over that.
water changes are all you need to remove nitrate, no point using checmicals to do it.
theres evidence to show that most tropical community fish dont suffer until you get to 400ppm or even 1000ppm so don't panic over 100ppm, some people even have 40ppm out of the tap and manage fine.
just aim to keep it no more than 20ppm higher than the level from your tap.
just do some large water changes and it'll come down.
