I bought a nano 40 yesterday night, Filled it with sand and water, added water treated with Tapsafe, Got it to temp.

I then got one of the sponges out of my other tanks filter and cleaned it out im my new tank.

Now my idea was that the bacteria out of my old tank will then be passed on to the new one

Anyone think this will work? and if so how long would yo leave it before adding Fishy's ?

( posted this in the Tropical chit chat section but i thing it belongs here, Still geting to grips witht he palce?)

I would just put some established filter media in your new filter. Or you can ue fish to help cycle the tank, I have used guppies do cycle most of mine.

I hope you didnt clean the sponge very well, that's where most of your nitrifying bacteria live. If you didnt you'll be right as rain. If you did you'll probably still be better off as you might have left some bacteria inside the sponge.

Do you mean you cleaned it out IN your new tank's WATER?

Many seem to think that the good bacteria dies after 12 hours of no food. If you want to test your nano out, try adding 4 ppm ammonia and see what happens.
