I have a 58 litre tank I am trying to fishless cycle and some homebase household ammonia at 9.5%. (No mention of perfume or anything, and i believe it, it reeks!)

How much ammonia ish to add to get tank to 5ppm?

I have just had to drain the tank and start again twice, I don' tknow why I cant do this.

Afternoon!

I used the Homebase ammonia to cycle my new 180l no probs.

The best way to calculate how much is to start small! I'd say 2ml would be fine for a tank that size (cycled my Mum's 60l with that amount)

However, if you want to check for yourself get a 10l or so bucket and add 4-5 drops of ammonia using a pippette or equivalent. Leave for 15 mins, test and add again as required. When you're at 4-5ppm, multiply what you've added up to a 60l equivalent. Leave the tank for an hour or so and test.

Crank your temp up to 30 degrees or so and I'm sure you can work out the rest!

What test kit are you using? The API liquid ones are the best from my experience.

I recently cycled a 109L tank using the same Homebase stuff and it worked a treat - couldnt believe it only took 12 days....!
I used the dropper from my test kit and as suggested started slowly, then tested every 15 mins or so to allow the pump to circulate the water evenly - I reached the required 50ppm after a total of 30 drops. After approx 4 days I had big spikes in Nitrite and Nitrate but no Amonia, I added another 30 drops and after only approx 3 days Amonia was down to zero again, I repeated until day 10 and had 30 drops going in and within 24 hours my stats were down to Zero across the board. I kept this going for another 2 days then did a massive water change. Then it was off to the LFS with my xmas prezzie vouchers and happily added 9 Cichlids all of whom are at present doing well.

.........................or do it the easy way.

Click on 'Aquarium Calculator' at the top of the page and have the exact amount calculated for you. :good:

Nice calculator. Never seen one that calculated ammonia before. That must be new since I was last active back in October or November.

It does come out to about what I always say and that is 1 ml per 5 gallons (US) will equal 5 ppm. Of course, it depends on the solution but most everything is 9.5%. It will lose stenthg with age though so if you've had it for while, it will probably take more.

Guilty as charged RDD. I thought it was a good idea so i gave William the formula and STD uploaded it into the aquarium calculator. I was very proud of that one. :D

It even has a space to put in the ammonia % of the solution, so if the solution isn't 9.5%, it'll still calculate correctly.

WHO DA BOY!!!!!!!
