While you wait on the nitrite to drop, you will need to continue to add ammonia daily to keep the level around 1 to 2 ppm. That amount should return to zero daily. If you don't continue to add ammonia and feed the bacteria that has developed, everything you have done and waited on so far will have been wasted as the bacteria will start to die off from lack of food.Miss Dib Dabs said:Eeeeeee nitrAtes are through the proverbial roof and so is nitrIte. Ammonia is almost down to 0 finally (Yay) just gotta wait out the nitrIte now. I test every day currently. I'm so impatient.![]()

test results came back the same last night............Jo and Gra said:a shoal of julli cory and some FW bumble bee goby
Yeah it's kinda like playing the Lotto.Jo and Gra said:exciting??
its annoying and boring!!!!
You should definitely do a large water change (75 to 90 percent) to get the nitrate down to the 5 to 10 range (unless you have high nitrate in your tap water which would make it a moot point). You will also need to continue to add a small amount of ammonia each day just as you have been until the day before you add fish. Otherwise, the bacteria will start to die off.glolite said:If nil no need for water change, just add fish. If nitrates over 40 then do a 40% water change and test again for nitrates. When below 40 add fish. The reason for lowering the nitAtes before adding fish is that it's really difficult ro lower the nitrAtes once fish are added and then you get algae problems. Worth persevering for an exra day to make your tank fish-friendly!!!!
I forgot that you were using flakes. There is probably already enough flakes in the tank to create more ammonia today. You should be good to go. The fish will also clean up any left over food that hasn't already decayed.Jo and Gra said:getting fish tomorrow......
only been adding fish flake to create the ammonia...
so shall i just continue doing that for today?
