So in middle of fishes cycle. Going okay after a very slow start. Processing about 2ppm of ammonia over 48 hours. Nitrites were clearing in 24 hours.

I had gravel in tank but wasn't happy with the look so decided to change it to black sand. Also I want corys. So I drained tank. It's a jewel internal so put sponges in a bucket with original water. Changed over substrate. Refilled tank with 150 liters and added 10mls of prime. Replaced filter sponges. Sponges out of tank for about 2 hours max. Temp up 28c. Ph over 8 with bicarb and added more ammonia, about 3ppm. 48hours later and ammonia is still static. I know the gravel would have held some bacteria but I would't have expected it to stall completely.

So the point of this post two fold. To vent and ask if there is any kind soul willing to donate any mature media in Belfast.

Fish for Christmas not looking good

Can cold water filter media be used in a tropical tank to kickstart cycle?

Yup. The bacteria may need a little more time to acclimate to the new conditions, but yes. Any sort of freshwater media will be beneficial.

ermmm, i am posting to devon so i can't... otherwise i will go below my safe level!
