Ok so, I've been cycling our 28 gallon with 4 danios (I know... it was a newbie mistake)....
They went into the tank Jan 2nd, and I've been doing 10% water changes every day since they went in. Everything seemed to be going great. Ammonia went up slowly, and spiked for a while, then I started getting nitrite readings and soon after nitrate.
Ammonia started to go down, nitrite and nitrate started to spike. Someone told me that I was probably overfeeding my fish causing the nitrate to spike to badly, so cut back on feeding a bit and voila! Nitrate went down along with nitrite.
Then one day.. ammonia was at 0, nitrite was at 0 and nitrate was at 0  This had me a bit boggled b/c I had thought that when your tank was cycled you'd always have nitrate readings.
I tested later that day and the test picked up a 5.0 reading.

But then.. I started getting ammonia readings again. :shout:

The only thing that changed was that I took out 2 of the danios. One to treat for finrot and the other to treat for frayed fins (was like that when we got him).
I don't understand how this would've caused ammonia to rise again though?
After the 2 fish 5 day treatment, I put the male back in (fem still has finrot that's being treated again)... and the ammonia is slowly climbing once again, but nitrite is still at 0 and nitrate is staying at a steady 10.

Just curious what's going on with our tank other than a simple "it's still cycling" answer :p heh? Would algae cause ammonia to rise? I've been noticing some brown algae on one of my anubias plants & looks like some is appearing on the breeders net.
I tested our tap for ammonia a while back and got a .25 reading. Would it be alright to use an ammonia removing chemical on replacement water when I do water changes? Would this mess up the cycling process any?
