how do you do this? I will have a spare 3g tank soon and want too culture live food in it. what live food can i culture in a tank like this and how do i do it?

brine shrimp are probably the best bet as saphnia and bloodworm turn into flys....

if you browse the more obscure shelves at your LFS you will probably be able to find brineshrimp eggs and brine shrimp food....

all you need then is a sprinkle of salt and an air stone and you have self replicateing food

I would like to culture daphnia - I would probably feed them to my fish before they become flies

(*comes home one day and seels alot of flies flying around the room*)

Can you tell me how to culture daphnia?

i can`t say that i can,

Brineshrimp live naturaly in water where as daphnia spend only a short part of there life in water so are much harder to culture.

Oh ok, I will check my lfs for brineshrimp! thanks for the help -

How much tank space (in gallons) will they require? i dont want to fill my 3g to the top. And would water changes and a filter be needed for culturing brine shrimp? If so, how often would i need to water change it ?

Thanks BigIan!

My lfs acctualy sells brine shrimp hatcherys There about the size of a coke can and come with all the salt tabs, eggs and food for brineshrimp. all you do is hook an air line up to the bottom fill it with water, pop in the tab and the eggs, and wath them grow then when they become large enough for your fish you pour them out of the hatchery into a fine net and feed to your fish,
I`m sure brine shrimp are pretty indestructable so water changes will probably be very rare, i think trial and error could be the way to go here, howver i do know some members on here who breed there own may be able o advise you better

i understood they were the larval form of some fly...

but if i`m wrong i`ll gladly back down...

hmmm....

i still think brine shrimp will be much easyer

Brineshrimp don't need much at all, ever heard of seamonkeys?

Brineshimp colonies in the space of less than 500ml of water, no filter and no heater :)

Hello PtarmiganUK,

I dont want to use the 3g tank for a fish because it will be ontop of a high shelf and not really seen.

I dont want a huge supply of daphnia.

Can you tell me how i can culture some daphnia in a 3 gallon tank?

things i need clearing up:
-Temprature
-Can i have the 3 gallon tank just half filled?
-Does the lid need to be on?
-lighting needed?
-filteration and water changes - are these neccary? if so how often should i change the water and how much?
-FOOD what shall i feed them? (i want somthing easily accessible)
-Can i use normal tap water - and does it need to be conditioned
-Do i need any gravel for them?
