Ctenopoma Acutirostre

you are quite limited with your tank size, i think the angels would potentially get to big to be in there, also i would consider it cruel to even keep a single bush fish in there. mine is about 5 inch and not fully grown it eats lance fish between 2" and 4" but there is no doubt in my mind if i put in bigger lance fish say 5" + it would still try and eat it. they have small needle type teeth which helps it keep fish in its mouth once it has grabbed it.
mine has scraps with my geophagus brasiliensis and thats a big nasty cichlid! bush fish vs harlequins and tetras = well, you do the equation

hmmmm so your saying that i couldnt even keep one spotted climbing perch? a lot of threads on here about 30gallon pred tanks all say that they would be fine.....???

have already stated that i am going to exchange my shoal (harles and pristella) for a smaller shoal of medium sized tetra....like bleeding hearts or red eyed tetra....

from speaking to nmonks who has kept them, he says that often it is about the width and depth of the fish not just the length....he says keepin them with medium sized tetra will be fine....

my stocking would be

2 spotted climbing perch
6-8 med tetra
1 BN/ or featherfin syno

in my opinion a rio 125 is not too small for angels...

I would look at one of the smaller Syno species or even have a group of upside Cats,
Syno Eupterus get to 8inches and are a big, bulky species.

ok...thanx...only said threadfin as i saw one today and it looked great...dont really know much about them.....what species are there that are smaller?

do you think my stocking will be ok 2 climbing perch, 6-8 med tetra, 1/2 small syno species

lol at the end of the day you will do what you want, angel fish can get to 8" + from fin tip to fin tip so wether you agree or not, this is too large for a 125 liter tank. a ctenopoma acutirostre can get to about 6" with a very big mouth! synodontis eupterus aswel as being large, topping 8" would munch off supprisingly large fish as far as tetras and similar are concerned. in the past i have taken chances with my fish, but i wouldn't do this but people insist on doing what they want and not what they should do

i understand your views....and realise what you are saying.

Ctenopoma Acutirostre can get to 6" but on a lot of evidence and threads from others they all say that a 125l is adequate for them....threads on the predatory forum has nurmous posts about suitable fish for a 30 gallon, and almost all of them say that a spotted climbing perch is ok. I would not have suggested doing this if i had not seen these threads, i also asked NMonks who i know has kept these species before, he too says they will be ok in this tank with a medium sized tetra.

Re: synodontis eupterus , i did not know they got to that size, and if you see my last post i state that i would not get that species but would look for a smaller species of syno...(any suggestions would be great)

Re: Angels, i understand that everyone has their own views on angel fish and what size is suitable for them, i kept 2 medium sized angels in my 125l tank, see my sig for photo...a lot of people keep them in even smaller tanks..this is off topic now as i dont intend to keep angel fish anyway!

Ive got a pair of Ctenopoma they are not shy at all, mine are out at the front of the tank as soon as i enter the room, they will even follow my finger about the glass....

Mine are about 6" with the male being slightly broader and having a horn on his nose. I have mine with a P Palmas some Hoplos and currently some annoying Congo Tetra which are about 4" each.

I fancied trying to get hold of another 6 Ctenopoma and seeing if i can get the pack hunting going in the tank like ive read about from the wild.

125litre would the total minimum id keep Angels in, I definately wouldnt put Ctenopoma in with them as the Angels would likely fin nip.

i was never going to put angel fish with the spotted climbing perch!!!!!!!!!

i already stated my stocking list previously....but after doing a bit more research and taking on board what everyone has been saying i have changed my stocking list:

going for the banded ctenopoma instead of the spotted climing perch.....as they are smaller and less agressive...will maybe get 3 or 4 of these

12 Barbus fasciolatus- african banded barb

or

10-12 Nannaethiops unitaeniatus- one striped tetra

3-4 upside catfish - Synodontis nigriventris

hope this stock list is a bit more realisitc, as the congos may have got too large for the tank as would the climbing perch

regards

I know this thread is a few week sold but just wanted to add my experience for future readers.

I keep 4 Ctenopoma Acutirostre in my 5ft tank with Praecox Rainbows and Glass Cats - the Ctenopoma are about 4" and are lovely and active - each with quite different personalities. They do have HUGE mouths but so far I've not lost any fish to them.

They feed well off frozen and pellet food and are wonderfull fish to keep.
