Hi

I have a problem. My water is never clear. i always have bits floating in it. I have live plants and id guess some of it is that, but the filter i bought doesnt seem much cop. its an eheim 2028, and should be more than enuff for the 260l tank. i was told that for really clear water, you should get a sump. So i have 2 questions really.

1) Can i drill any part of my tank - Juwel vision 260. Id guess the bow front is tempered glass, but is the bottom or back?

2) I dont fully understand the physics of a sump. I mean, if the sump pump fails, wouldnt the siphon effect empty the tank into the sump and onto your floor? Sureley its hard to get the outflow from the tank to match the pump from the sump , hence you will get one or the other filling up and draining the other. Anyone explain in laymans terms?

you dont NEED a sump at all for clear water.

all my tanks are crystal clear and i use internal filters.

as for the sump, im not sure where you could drill but your right in saying if the return pump fails then your screwed lol.

i was thinkin of making one myself out of a spare 3ft tank i have but it all sounds a bit risky for a numpty like me :D .

anyone wanna make me a sump? :p

I have a juwel 240 (the next one down from you) and I also have an Eheim 2028 on it. My water is perfectly clear, and yes it is and should be more than enough for your tank. The only thing that I can think of is that you have put something in your tank. I know that my tank always goes cloudy whenever I put in cucumber. Do you do anything like that?

You set the sump tank up so that if the return pump failed there would be enough space in the sump tank to accept all of the water so no you don't have to worry about the tank dumping its water all over the floor.

We have sump filteration on all but one of our tanks and the only time water ends up on the floor is when we forget to turn off the tap when re filling after the water changes.

And no you don't need a sump for crystal clear water. Your bits will probably relate to plants and therefore you need to look at your filter

to the original poster - do you have big fish?

if your overfiltering then there mite be a decent current in there so any debris that gets knocked off is gettin blown about rather than stickin in one spot and thats why it seems worse than other tanks.

i rescued a 10" plec from a 2ft tank and put him in my 80G community which is quite heavily planted and im forever re planting and netting out leaves hes taken off.

he seems to only take a few routes through the plants tho so ive tried to keep them clear now and thats helped quite a bit.
