hi just bought a pair of these today, very nice looking, got the guy to try pick out a male and female, he seemed pretty sure he did, i know bits about them but does anyone have any more info on them,
if they turn out not to be male and female can i just add a couple more until a pair forms or would i be better exchanging 1 for another?
how do they breed? do they just lay eggs on a rock or wood and both guard them or do they breed a different way?
are they easy to breed?
i know cichlids are cichlids, and territorial, but on a whole what is their temperament like?
they are only around 3" at the moment and are f1 bred from wild parents, and are a very nice colour but have seen they get an even nicer colour as they mature!
i payed £7 for the 2, is that a reasonable price?

just any extra info if anyone has any please!!

Dave

C.Cutteri is just a colour/regional morph of Cryptoheros spilurus

IME spilirus/cutteri/sajica/HRP all are very similar to your convict, very easy to breed and can cause trouble when breeding. None are as aggressive as convicts IME but the similarites are easily noticed when you keep them.

Again with all of these species adding a random male and female is much more likely to result in a pair than if you were to put many other species together (i.e.Thorichthys for example)

£3.50 is about right IMO

We bought 3 females and a male, it might just be chance but one of the females had paired up with the males within a week. A week after that we had eggs. they breed extremely prolifically - just like convicts!

They can get pretty agressive when breeding to the point I have removed the pair from my cichlid tank. The rest of the fish were confined to the top right hand corner of the tank! My poor sailfin pleco wasn't aware what was going on so ended up with some rather tatty fins.

They have so far spawned on underside of leaves, underside of slate, side of slate, side of filter - pretty much anywhere! Their breeding colours are stunning, especially once the female has spawned and her throat goes black too.

Here is a previous post of mine with pics:

oh wow, i got told about them going white when breeding, didnt think it was that white! lol
1 of mine chases the rest but a couple of them stay together in a corner so i have hope! ye similar shape to convicts arent they, a lot nicer though!!
they are in a community with big aggressive fish so won't breed yet, just growing them a bit first then if a pair form i shall give them their own tank.
i might just put a bit of slate in the corner with the pair, if they lay eggs i will remove them into a spare tank!
