Java fern can grow in brackish conditions, but should not be grown actually IN any type of substrate. You need to attach it to bogwood or rock/stone with fishing line/cable ties etc.

I assumed it was a brackish tank if crushed coral is being used?Hope I'm not wrong,or if I am,that op has a wee rethink.(Just checked and op is setting up a mbuna tank).

African Cichlids aren't brackish fish!!!

its an african cichlid tank

I assume you are you using the crushed coral to buffer and help to keep the Ph up?

Plants will grow OK. Hard water doesn't have much effect on plants but salt will. My tap is classed as very hard and has a Ph of 7.2-7.4
