I am starting a new fish tank and I was thinking about using crushed brick as gravel. Would this cause any problems or be unsafe for the fish?

There are a lot of different types of brick, so its hard to say, I would guess that it wouldnt be a good substrate material. you can tell by the vinegar test, drop a few drops of vinegar on the rock or brick, if it fizzes or bubbles you cannot use it in your tank. Also, its bound to be sharp and rough, not good for fish, especially bottom feeders or snails.

Also, check out the pinned posts on this page about Fishless Cycling before you get started.

I am no bricky but I would suggest there are all sorts of stuff in brick that would make it an unsuitable substrate

Thanks for the quick replies. I didn't think about the sharpness.. Would the sharpness/roughness of a dead piece of coral make it a bad addition to a freshwater aquarium as well?

I dont think coral is a good thing in a freshwater tank either, could affect the PH of your tank. Best to stick with things that are sold or made specifically for use in aquariums. When in doubt about any rock, I again suggest the vinegar test.
