I know how important a healthy diet is for me, so I try to extend this theory to my fishes. Live foods, dead foods, flake/tablet foods, spiroforma tablets, and high protein granules have been used.

Most recently, I've fed my fishes cucumber slices, greenfly, blackfly, whitefly, and have started using...... bread crumbs.

Has anyone else considered giving this a go?

Technically, you're right heresmike. Something to do with the bread expanding in the water. However, I've seen wild fishes gorging themselves on bread when feeding wildfowl.

So because wild fish does something that may be bad for them you think that makes it okay to do it with your fish? Maybe you saw the fish eating the bread. Maybe you didn't see the ones that already ate bread and had died. I don't think bread is good for fish either and my fish don't get it. Regardless of whether or not you have seen some eat it. People use cocain, does that make it okay for everyone to use?

Wow, that was a bit harsh. He was just asking a question and pointing out his observations. Neither of which begged a nasty response, IMO.

I don't think I'd chance feeding bread or bread crumbs, I think you can definitely achieve a balanced, healthy diet without them.

I can't believe that it is now no longer safe to even post a topic in the forum without someone trying to 'jump down your throat' for something you want an opinion about, and then have the audacity to compare it/warp it further into an issue regarding cocaine. If I had wanted to know about cocaine I would've asked for info on it.

I thank you for your opinions, but I won't thank you for your critiscisms because why else would I post this topic if I did not want your opinons? Yes, I had an inkling that bread can be 'bad' for fishes, but I want to know what our other members have to say about this. What part of the topics title was misleading to either of you? Here's a big hint, the question ended with a "?"

It sounds like some of our members do not know the difference between opinions and (overt) critiscism.

bread doesnt hurt fish.

i practically raised my fry on breadcrumbs and brine shrimp. if it hurt them i would have seen problems.

besides, if bread expanded in their stomach too much they would just vomit. i think alot of you do not five fish as much credit as you should.

some of you people are quite moody on here.

They also don't know how Robin's quote actually goes!

The phrase is actually, "Holy smokes Batman!"

... Just for the record.
For the record... there isn't really just one quote. It's holy "whatever" Batman. Robin would say "Holy crumbs, Batman!" if he was talking about feeding bread to fish, or "Holy sand as a substrate, Batman!", or "Holy nitrite spike, Batman!", or "Holy weekly water change, Batman!" Get the picture? :p

With the HUGE selection of wonderful fish foods on the market, not to mention all of the acceptable home brews, there's basically no excuse for feeding tropical fish bread crumbs. It has nothing to do with expansion of the bread. It has basically no protein, which is what fish really need in their diet, instead it consists of sugars and starches, neither of which are present in a fish's natural diet in those high concentrations. It is not a healthy addition to your feeding routine.

I apologize if you thought I was being harsh, I mearly meant to convey my thoughts with an example that. I gave my opinion, and again, I apologize if you feel my opinion was harsh. However, I also defend my comparison without shame or guilt. The original poster made a comment that he agreed that "technically" bread is bad for his fish. Having agreed with that point but still feeding bread to his fish is, IMO, less than responsible. If he had said "I don't agree, here's why" and then fed his fish bread that would have been an entirely different matter. As I read the posts prior to my fist posts, the question was asked about feeding bread to fish. A member said that they thought it was bad for fish. The original poster replied that he agreed. My comments were directed at this statement. If I agreed that keeping my fish at 90*F was bad for them but still continued to do so, I am sure people would have made comment about this. My point, and my comparison is perfectly valid.

They are your fish. Feed them what you want. I personally will not feed my fish bread. I don't think that the bread will expand and harm my fish. I think most bread has little nutritional value for people, and probably has less for fish. Most fish in the wild do not eat bread.
