With a spare tank that I have I'm going to start off a shrimp tank and after some internet searching I like the look of the high grade Crystal Red Shrimp, although these do seem a little expensive in my LFS (Might try Ebay)

I think a black substrate would make them look their best but not sure if either sand or gravel is best. I don't think I'll be planting in the substrate as I'm going to try some floating Amazon frogbit, a few moss balls and some Java moss on slate or bog wood.

Can anyone recommend any makes / suppliers of black substrates that would work well?

Darren

P.S has anyone got any Crystal Reds for sale

After 3 diff shrimp tanks i gave Fluval Shrimp Stratum Substrate a try, well impressed with it. the shrimp and plant seem much better although colour wise it is a very dark drown but looks more natural. pic

That looks really nice thanks for posting the pic.

The Fluval Shrimp Stratum Substrate is about a £10 online so I will see whats available at my LFS.

Cheers Darren

Just got back from my LFS with my new purchase of Fluval Shrimp Stratum Substrate. I followed the instructions about washing the dust off of it first then carefully filled the tank with water only to find it has made the water the cloudiest and blackest that you could possibly imagine  hopefully by the time I've had a good read of TFF it'll be back to normal.

Just need to get hold of some Crystal Red Shrimp now! Has anyone got any for sale before I place my bid on the Bay of E

Cheers

Darren

I will also post in the wanted section here

Do you find the tank goes very black if you slightly disturb the substrate?

i just set up my tank with stratum, and it literally took 2 days to clear, it was horrible... but now its all crystal clear and im loving the look.
