been wanting to breed bettas again for a while now so i went ahead.
got myself 2 male crown tail bettas, one white with blue n purple specs, the other is yellow with blue specs. got a couple of my girlfriends crown tail females, one white with blue specs, the other a solid purple tinted metallic silver.
i conditioned them, each separated from anything else and fed live food. put both males in separate 30 L tanks with about 5 inches of water (syphoned from original tank) and frogbit and a few other lengths of plants just thrown in.
both by the next day had built bubble nests. i put 1 female next to each tank in clear containers to introduce them to the males.
after 1 day (and night) put the females in with the males, the silver female with the white male and the white female with the yellow male. yesterday the white female an the yellow male bred, after i removed the female into a breeding net in the original tank to recover, about an hour later the eggs were gone. the only conclusion i could come to was the male ate them?
today the other pair bred, took hours! when they finished i removed the female and placed in a net to recover, this male is doing better, looking after the eggs, placing fallen eggs back in the nest and so on.
am i right in thinking they should hatch in about 48 hours?
also would i be right in thinking you leave the male in there with the fry until about 48 hours after the fry hatch or are free swimming?
i have no access to newly hatched brine shrimp, so would would be a good alternative? e.g. liquifry? or would they eat the algae and so on from the fogbit roots and the plants in there?
any and all information will be appreciated.
Thanks
David

Grats on your spawn :good:

The eggs should start to hatch anytime from 36hrs onwards. The male can stay in until the majority of the fry are free swimming, normally around 2 days old.

If you haven't got BBS, the only alternatives are - Betta starter (fine powder), Microworm, Vinegar eel, Infusoria. Cant comment on Liquifry as we haven't used it, but have heard it can mess the water up.

We have just received some Decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, that you soak in water for a few minutes and feed to the fry. Haven't used it yet though. Seller on ebay is "scottish-discus".

Give us a shout if you want some Vinegar eel as we have loads :)

Personally having used liquifry with my fry it didnt work at all, it seemed a waste of money to me I dont rate it

hi i think I'm going to have to get some of the powder type food if i can get it.
I'd prefer to get the live foods like the vinegar eels but i have no way of obtaining them or paying for them over the net as of yet so i guess I'll have to make do with what i can get.
one more question!
when they breed for the first time it doesn't always go correctly, right?
when they were mating, wrapping round the female, you could tell he was a 1st timer!
some times when she released the eggs he was already on the bottom searching for eggs to pick up so in my opinion it was impossible for him to have fertilized them. is it most likely some of them will be fertilized and some not?
or is it more likely none of them will hatch?
thanks for the info and advice

Hi

Its very much a waiting game ref the fertility of the eggs. Some males are pretty useless 1st time around, we've had a couple like that recently. My PK spawn went pretty well for 1st timers though :good:

Even if you end up with 20-30 little wrigglers, thats still a success :good:

Sending you pm too.

hi sent you a pm back.
yeah i'm not getting my hopes up but like you said even if there is 30 or even less its a success!
i suppose once you've done it, experience and knowledge means you can only get better!
Thanks again!
David
