I took out my Crinum calamistratum to clean the algae off of it and I noticed it smelled funny. Part of the bulb was a little squishy so I took off that part. The plant doesn't seem to be dying yet. Is it salvageable? Why was it squishy?
The roots are white and look healthy and there are side shoots growing out of it.

When I first bought it, it wasn't in the best condition and it was really cheap. Thought I could try to save it.

Should be OK. Clean off the gunk and maybe strip back some of the dead outer leaves (like peeling an onion sorta). Don't go too far though.
