I raised a red WAGTAIL platy (actually was in a group of red mickey mouse platies - it only has about half the black of a wagtail) alone to adulthood. I've bred her to a calico red/orange platy from a diferent tank.

Any predictions, comments or advice about what kind of MIX I'll get from this planned union are welcome. Yes, my own little science project. Both have different patterns of black markings on a red or red/orange body.

I'm hoping I'll find/create an interesting (new?) pattern - in which case, I might try to get it to breed true over several generations.

Thanks,
Jim

Male Livebearers are mating machines, so I'm sure she's pregnant by now. Unfertilized ones are able to be impregnanted at anytime, yes. They can also store sperm for a long while, up to 7 batches, so one mating goes a long way.

My prediction would be mostly the same color, with perhaps a hint of orange. Since they are the same color, the only thing I see that would change is the orange, am I right? There might be some hidden reccessive traits in either of them, but I doubt those would show through in this pairing.

The easiest way probably is to go to your profile, click the profile options button, and then click 'Find Member's Topics'.

Good luck with your pairing! Oh yes, and I wouldn't keep her in with the male unless you plan on getting at least one more female. Otherwise, a lot of stress will fall on her from the male constantly pestering her.

AAK! I initially wrote my question wrong and indicated both platies are calicos. in fact they both ghave different patterns of black markings... Thanks much Annastasia for your excellent reply to my first posting.

Well that's different then.

I've found Wagtails to be a very dominant color variation, so I would expect a lot of them to come out Wagtails. Possibly a mix. I'm not sure how dominant Calico would be, as I've never bred Calicos. Perhaps someone can come along with more experience on that. It should be interesting to see what comes out of. Good luck with it, and be sure to keep us updated!

I would think with all the people breeding livebearers today that cross-breeding and inbreeding should have all of the different types of livebearers  or very soon
