I went into an LFS i hadnt been into in a long time for a squiz at their fishy collection (they have a 15 year old giant gourami. He's pretty ).
Anyways so i was making my way along the wall of tanks and noticed they had some gudgeons (they looked a little pale though). On the glass of their tank there were two descriptions, as if there were two different types of fish in the same tank..i dont think there was though..one was 'gudgeon' and the other was...wait for it......'CRAZY FISH' !!!

 wtf?

Crazy fish is an old name for Butis butis, a sleeper goby. Sleeper gobies are known, I believe, in Australia as "gudgeons". I supposed British settlers though they looked like the European gudgeon, a kind of cyprinid, Gobio gobio.

Butis butis is a freshwater to marine sleeper, gets to about 15 cm, predatory, a bit territorial, but otherwise pleasant enough. It's common name, crazy fish, refers to its habit of resting at odd angles, e.g., vertically and head downwards against a piece of bogwood.

Cheers,

Neale
