I have had my angels for maybe a month. Almost immediately, they started fleshing out territory and dominance. I have 1 Silver, 2 Silver Ghosts and 2 Zebra Lace angels.
Very early on, the silver paired up with one of the ghosts and they spawned on the side of a breeding net. The silver is the female, the ghost is the male. Very predictably, they ate the eggs overnight. This was 2 weeks ago.
Last Sunday, as the angels paired up again, this time, it was the 2 silver ghosts who spawned. This time, they laid their eggs on some driftwood in the middle of the tank. The silver, the original female was very put out. The fry hatched and have been wriggling away. The silver female who was NOT involved with this spawning was getting swollen with eggs and her breeding tube was all the way out.
Today, I came home from work and the fry have been moved to the side of the breeding net and there is another clutch of eggs, right above them on the side of the net! Now, it's the 2 females guarding the fry and the eggs and they won't let the male near! I have no idea if this new batch has been fertilized.
The 2 zebra lace angels are just steering clear of the whole ordeal and aren't involved at all.
Crazy thing is, I spent a good 2-3 years obsessed with trying to breed SOMETHING. GBRs, angels, kribs, whatever. The only fish I got to successfully spawn were the kribs. This time, I was converting back to a freshwater tank after having a saltwater tank for about 2 years and I just wanted a low maintenance, no fuss angel centered community tank. Murphy's law of fish raising!
