my cray has just moulted this morning, problem is, the old shell is floating at the top of the tank. i know the cray will eat the old shell in order to fully form to the new one, but how can i get it back to the bottom of the tank!!!?

sorted i managed to put it inside his house so it wont float away while under cover :) will keep an eye throughout the day

don't worry even if your Cray does not get to eat it, my pleco usually gets there first, no harm will come of it. it takes no part in hardening, or anything else for that matter, of the carapace. what the cray is after is the organic bonds, in the old shell, as all. or ,most, of the calcium is withdrawn prior to the moult.
