i have a 40 gal tank with a 6-7 inch crack on the bottom can it be fixed, if so, how?

Where on the bottom? Is it on the bottom glass or on the side or front panels closer to the bottom. If it is the bottom glass, then it needs to be replaced. Most tanks have tempered glass on the bottom. You just need to remove the supports (if any) and completely remove the silicone. Silicone does not bond to silicone well, so when you replace the glass and add the silicone, you will have problems.

Is the crack on the base or on a flat part in the cetnre of any of the glass panels?

if so then you can fix it of sorts.

basically you drill a tiny hole at both ends of the crack, this will stop it from spreading, then silicone gell a new piece of glass over the crack with about 2-3 inches excess on each side. Job done.

----------------- <-- Crack

o---------------o <----crack with drill holes. the crack will have no where else to spread as it has reached the edge of the glass.

Hello,
I recentley repaired a crack on one of my fish tanks it was about 5 or 6 inches i didn't drill holes at the ends of the crack i just put another piece of glass on top but make the piece of glass 3-4 inches bigger than the crack but when putting the other piece of glass on top cover the piece of glass the whole bottom of the glass and once put on the crack put around the edge of the glass that fixed it for me.
Good Luck.

Thats great, but there is nothing stopping the crack from spreading more. Thas what the holes are for ;)

Yep, I wouldn't recommend that - the previous owners of our old 4ft tank had just stuck another panel over the top, the crack spread, and we ended up with a planted tank with lots of inhabitants needing a new home (well, a new tank - with us still!).

Its still in my back garden, I'm going to use it for my land snails instead lol - wouldn't trust myself to fix it.
