Hi guys!
I just purchased 5 neon tetras (i'll be getting many more soon, don't worry), and in the tank with them I noticed black neon tetras. Will the two school? Because if so I'd think it would be cool to have like 15 neons, and like 5 black ones mixed in. Just an idea though!

Second question, I also noticed a few REALLY pretty calico angels. I was going to purchase 1 when I noticed that both the calicos had red in their eyes. It wasn't that they had red eyes, it was like have the eye was red, and the other half was normal. I only noticed it on the two calico's, not on the marble one that was with them. Is this normal? Or does it point to illness?

Thanks!

I've heard success stories with the two, I'm planning on letting the neons grow to full size, and buying a very small angel and allowing the angel to grow up with the neons. From what I've read this is the best way to do it. If it doesn't work out, I can put the neons into a different tank. :good:

The two types of tetra are different species, they're as different as eg neons and black phantoms. Youd have two groups, one of 15 fish, one of 5. The blacks would probably go around with the neons due to there being safety in numbers. Shoaling fish should be in groups 6+, you'd be better off getting At least 10 of each if you really wanted two kinds, but one large shoal of 20 of one species would be even better.

Can't comment on the angels.

I understand that angel fish eat neons. They are their natural preditor. I know my neighbour had 6 neons, he added a couple of angel fish and all his neons disappeared ... maybe best to do a lot of research first :)

I have 18 neons in with two pretty small angel fish and they so far are fine, haven't even tried to chase the neons :good:

ive read online that in rare cases, if the neons grow up with the angel, and they have enough space, they get along fine.

in rare cases

Does anyone know the answer to my question about the angels?

I'm hoping the angel and neons work, but if not I'm prepared

whilst the angel is small i wouldnt worry - but when its bigger it probably would eat the neons...why dont you try cardinals? they are slightly bigger than neons and are similar in appearance

How big is your tank AnimalHouse36? Angelfish need reasonably large tanks.

Black Neons are even larger than Cardinals.................probably too big to fit into the Angel's mouth. Personally I'd go with all Black Neons or Red Phantom Tetras instead of Neons or Cardinals.

It looks like the Calicos have red under their eyes. Here's a random pic of a Calico Angel Fish:

Thanks for the reply! But it was the actual eyeball that had the red blotches on it. I'll look into purchasing the black neon tetras, but I've got my fingers crossed that an angel will be okay with the neons.

CezzaXV: It's a 55 gallon, minimum for an angel being a 30 gallon tall, so the angel should have plenty of room!

You should be good as I have my breeder pair of angels in a 55 tall, but if you develop a pair, they will absolutely terrorize ANYTHING else in the tank up to fish 3 times their size. Hence only 2 angels in a 55, lol   ! Some are worse than others ,as in I will totally kill and dismember you then string your intestines on the plants , like my pair, or some will just chase and nip others to death.

On the red eyes... usually red IN the eyes is a sign of blindness or impaired vision.
