Heya, im beginning to set up a tank and i have been thinking whether to get silk plants or real ones...

What i want to know is, would the fish mind if they arent real ? or are fake ones bad for fish ?

Also, what do you need to set up a tank with real plants in and is it expensive to do, im a student setting up my first tank, ive heard some people talk about co2 pumps and canisters and complex kit like that ...

what do you actually need ?

Cheers, Chris

i have only just set up my first tropical tank and i have loads of plants in my fish.
Wouldnt think the fish would mind and fake s arent bad for fish but some fish may settle in better with real plants and will supplement their diets. My plants are normally eaten by my mollies.
I dont use anything special for my plants. Just good high intensity T5 lighting whihc is left on for about 15 hours a day. I have mainly hygrophilla in my tank and it thrives.
Hope this helps

Do you use any fertiliser or special compost or anything ?

this does help thanks !!

you say you mainly have hygrophilla, what others do you have ? also, does your tank suffer from green water or algae growth etc ?

i would say plants are easy.

you can have a large variety of plants with no co2 or fertilizers, as long as you have a good light.

I have java moss, cabomba and vallis growing just in the sand at the bottom of my tank with no CO2, I just dose 5ml of Nutrafin Plant Gro once per week :) The java moss is quite slow to grow anyway and without CO2 it is slower, but if you aren't looking for huge amounts of growth over a short period of time then it's fine. :good:
