I would like to add a cichlid or two to my 37 gallon barb tank. after asking around, the general concensus seems to be that a convict or a firemouth would be ok. i have 4 tiger barbs and 2 rosy barbs. and will probably be adding 3 cory cats as some point too.

would one black convict by himself be lonely without another one? is getting a pair too much? if i did get a pair, are two females better for controlling aggression?

the firemouth interests me too, but mainly the convicts. i love how they look!

finally, does anyone feel that a black convict (or two) would be asking for trouble with the tiger barbs?

The convicts won't be able to catch the barbs very easily. If you get 2 convicts, they will probably try to kill everything in the tank if they are a pair. So 2 females is best. They breed like rabbits also. I have found firemouths to be pretty dosile in a community tank. Also you might check into a breeding pair of jewel cichlids if you are thinking about breeding. Their breeding color are amazing.

Or how about a convict and firemouth. Then you have the best of both worlds ;) You could look into a blue acara as well, very beautiful fish and gets about the same size.

So i take it one convict won't get "lonely" or anything having no other convicts around then huh?

one firemouth and one convict sounds good to me then, if that's the case. perhaps i'll just start with the convict.

One convict is fine, they won't get lonely. They have your tiger barbs to chase around! hehe.
