as above.... or would the tank be just too small for the overcrowding nature of the fish?? i do have a decent filtration setup fluval U3 and a mature fluval U2 filter.

Comments or suggestions of other similar setups would be appreciated :good:

Seen your thread, but I kno noooothing about Malawi's so I didn't comment before. So I can't help you.. sorryness.

No you couldn't! They are aggressive fish and need lots if room for their terotories! You need about 40"+ long and about 200l or so. (I think correct me if I'm wrong!)

moved over to old world section, you will get more help there.

Perhaps you could do a single species tank with one male and 3 or 4 females?
What dimensions does this 90l tank have?

with a small tank you wil be looking at mbuna as a lot of haps etc will grow way too large, there are some dwarf mbuna species which grow no more than 4". Thing is, some of them are very aggressive and you will have to keep them in small numbers due to tank size, however they will be more aggressive in small numbers and aggression will be targeted at 1 or 2 fish.

As said, the dimensions of your tank are vital, a 90l hexagon tank would be useless, where a 90l tank 3ft (Ok, unlikely)long would be a lot better.

You may be Ok if you carefully select your species and keep one species, absolutley only 1 male in your tank or you may find bodies floating around your tank. A possible species may be yellow labs as they are one of the more peaceful mbuna.

Your question was 'Could I?' answer to that is probably! A better question may be 'Should I?'

I know someone who keeps 4 Mbuna's in a 60L tank. I advised getting a bigger one but apparently they've been doing ok for quite some time...

I know someone with an Oscar in a 36"x12"x12" and it's not dead yet either... he is an idiot too. Simple answer to the OPs question is no. Too small a tank for anything other than fry and a hospital tank.

my tanks dimensions are on (My link) it says:
Fluval Roma 90 Aquarium Dimensions:

  • 60cm long x 35cm wide x 45cm high
  • Volume 90 litres
but if it is too small even for the smallest size malawi i wouldnt even contemplate it as i dont wana stunt or harm any fish :p
its a shame as i really like the them :(

are there any other similar setups i could do? i want a colourful active swimming tank.... i eventually will upgrade to a bigger tank but as im just starting out in fishkeeping i wanted to keep it simple yet fun to watch :)

You could possibly have some Shelldwellers (Tangs) in there.

But as has been said above, too small for Mbuna.

my tank is about 90 ltrs.i have i betta 3killifish a golden loach and two kribensis and they seem fine.
just check how big the ones your looking for eventulaay get and buy gear around them.
