Hi

I have a platy and I noticed a cotton like supstance on the tail. It is a little ball (only one). Anyone have an idea of what it is? Could this be ich? I only noticed one ball. This fish is very active.
What should I do?

I have another platy that I think is sick in the tank also. Which has a cotton like substance over the eye. That seems to be improving but this fish seems to not want to eat. I think this one passed this disease over to my other fish.

I do water partial water changes daily due to high ammonia. I know the fish get stressed out when I do that.

I do have aquarium salt in the water.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It's a fungal infection - you'll need to get a fungicide in there. It is caused by the ammonia and nitrite, as you suspected so carry on the daily water changes. I'd very much doubt the fish don't like it - what is it about their behaviour that gives you that impression?

Hi Alien Anna

When I do the water change, they both hide on the side of the heater.

( I do about a 10% water change every day, is this a good amount? I have a 10 gallon tank).

Can you recommend a fungicide?

When I use it, do I put it in the tank or do I just seperate the fish out of the tank?

Is it okay to have the aquarium salt in the water when using the medication?

Do you think that having aquarium salt in the water helps the situation?

Thank you !

They probably aren't used to you yet but that's OK - they'll get tamer as they realise you are the hand that feeds them.

If you have several fish in a small tank with fungus I would treat the whole tank. Generally I'd recommend a hospital tank but if you haven't got one, you'll just have to treat the whole tank anyway. I generally use Waterlife's Protazin, which is for whitespot and fungus, or Interpet's "Finrot and Fungus" remedy. It is fine to use it with salt. Also raise the temperature a little as low temperature can lead to fungus. Incidently, the "fungus" is actually a kind of bacterial infection.

What should I do about the one fish that will not eat? She will try to eat a little but then will spit out the food. This has been going on for about a week. She seems to be lying on the gravel a lot. I think she may die.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you!
